What is Citizen Science?
Citizen science, or participatory science, is the active involvement of citizens in the collection, analysis and interpretation of data for scientific purposes. By focusing on the interface between science and society, Citizen Science embodies the complexity of both, acquiring very different forms. One of the most common definitions describes it as “the involvement of volunteers and scientists in collaborative research activities, to generate new knowledge based on scientific evidence.”
Many ways to participate
Citizen Science applies to many sciences. From plastic waste to air or water quality, from noise or light pollution to protein structure identification, from plant and animal monitoring (biodiversity) to astronomy, contributing to the classification of celestial bodies or the discovery of meteorites. Other applications range from detecting earthquakes to the study of diseases and other health aspects, to activities involving the humanities and social sciences. Just to give a few examples...
In recent years, a growing interest has developed in Italy in a way of doing science that actively involves society. Since 2016, a group of scientists and citizen science advocates have started collaborating.
II 17 February 2023 the association Citizen Science Italia ETS, based at the Museum of Natural History of Maremma, in Grosseto, has come to life. CSI works with an open and inclusive spirit, to give voice to the various souls of this articulated and stimulating world.
Citizen Science Italia working groups
The Working Groups of Citizen Science Italia are a focal element of the association, to which all members can join to help increase the visibility and impact of citizen science in our country.
